Sheets and shadows
My painting "Sheets and Shadows" shows two ghosts in front of school lockers. I created it for my art class as part of our "Spooky Paintings" project, which was inspired by Halloween. I used a photo I took at school -where another girl and I are dressed as ghosts- as a reference. As an aid, I first drew a sketch of my painting on the canvas and then continued working with acrylic paints. In this picture, I intentionally placed the two ghosts very close together because I feel it represents friendship very well. Furthermore, I find the lockers in the background very fitting, since they only exist in the USA and not in my previous school in Germany, and with them and the ghosts in front, I can show how well I've been welcomed at this new school. It was my first time basing my artwork on a picture I had made myself. Because of that, the final piece feels more like I've painted something unique.
Dancing lilies
My art piece "Dancing Lilies" shows a lily drawn on a black-painted CD. I created it for my art class as part of our "Anything but a Canvas" project. I chose to draw a lily because of my sister, who loves lilies and music. As a first step, I painted the CD black and sketched the lily on the CD as an guide. After that, I continued working with acrylic paints to complete the piece. The CD is intended as a Christmas present for my sister. Unfortunately, I cannot give it to her in person since she lives in Germany. This will be my first Christmas without my mother and sister, but making gifts for them anyway helps me feel like they are with me during Christmas.
A wonder in the wild
The piece "A wonder in the jungle" shows a baby lion within a watercolor square, surrounded by an ink-drawn jungle. I painted it for my art class as part of our "Watercolor- beyond the border" project. I began with a sketch as a guide, then painted the square, the baby lion, the butterfly and the rock with watercolor. Finally, I added the jungle details using ink to complete the piece. I intentionally chose to draw the baby lion watching the butterfly to represent the child like curiosity present in every species. This was my first time painting with watercolor in a long time, and I really enjoyed the process.
Half Seen, Half Felt
My piece "Half Seen, Half Felt" shows a woman whose face merges with pink bubbles. Using a technique of visual overlap, the work blurs the boundary between body and environment.
I created it for my art class project. I began with bubble painting to form the background structure. After that, I sketched the figure of the women and completed the piece with black acrylic.
I chose to paint the women to create the contrast between controlled linework and a dynamic pink background.
Golden Tide
My piece "Golden Tide", shows two fishes swimming in a purple and gold ocean. I created it for my art class as part of a fluid art project using paint pouring. After completing the pour, I added two fishes. I first drew a sketch on the canvas as a guide and then worked with acrylic paints. It was my very first paint pouring piece, and I'm very happy with the result. I decided to add the fishes because I think the background looks like the ocean, and they bring a sense of calm to the final piece.
Pajarito
This piece, titled "Pajarito" (little bird), is part of my fluid art project. The background is created through paper marbling, featuring a vibrant palette. I sketched a black bird on top of it and added details using acrylic paints. The nickname "pajarito" was given to me by my mother because she says I'm like a little bird she can't keep in one place, as I'm always drawn to new places and experiences. While the colors are intensity bright, they are meant to represent the myriad of emotions and the vibrant world surrounding us.
Flowing Blossom
The art piece "Flowing Blossom" shows a flower which was created using blue and purple watercolor in an ink-blowing technique. I slightly wet the paper in a flower shape so the paint could spread more naturally and create soft forms. I had to wait until each row of flower petals was dry before adding another. After the last row dried, I used a thin black liner to redraw and define the flower shape. I enjoyed the progress of this work, however, it was a lot of waiting time until everything was dry.
A shade of you
The artwork "A shade of you" shows a woman surrounded by a grey, smoke-like looking background. I made this piece using fumage, a technique where candle smoke creates a soft grey base. After that, I slowly brought out the face of a woman using light brushwork. Finally, I fixed the image with hairspray and added details with black and white charcoal pencils. I like that the woman looks like she was fading because it represents the struggle of women who hide their emotions.
Hidden in angels
The artwork "hidden in angels" shows a woman created through sharp shapes and dark earthy tones. I created this piece in a cubism-inspired style. After sketching a modeling photograph of myself onto the canvas, I added various shapes and lines to establish the cubist foundation. I then used acrylic paint to layer different shapes of brown, black, white and grey. The piece represents how models are often viewed as objects instead of real people with emotions and individuality. I like that the figure looks both strong and disconnected ,as it reflects how modeling can make someone feel admired on the outside but unseen as a person underneath. This is my first time that creating a cubism piece and can not wait to finish it.
